Announcing the Dev(){CoP} Mentorship Program

After hearing experiences of people creating ad hoc mentorships from being part of Dev() { CoP }, we’ve decided to formalise it! 

We’re on the hunt for mentors and mentees! 

Are you someone new in the IT industry? Are you looking for guidance around your career or specific aspirations? Sign up to be a mentee, we’ll find someone to help you with this.

Are you an experienced developer or software architect? Can you offer students and junior developers some help navigating the traps of the industry and guide them when needed? Sign up to be a mentor and we will find someone you can help.

Mentee Responsibilities 

  • Answer: why do you need a mentor?

Answering this will help us find you the right mentor, as well as setting up the relationship with your mentor on the right foot!

  • Honestly Commit to Your Mentor

A mentor/mentee relationship is based on honestly agreeing on what both of your levels of commitment are. Be upfront about the time you will commit to the mentorship! Both of you can come back later if your needs aren’t being met.

  • Own Your Mentorship

Make a list of a few items for discussion before each time you meet with your mentor. You’ll rarely get off-topic in this way. When advice is offered, think about how you can apply this and actively illustrate your experiences doing so.

  • Be Open

Your mentor is offering you their perspective, based on their experience. They’re keen to help you, so be open to their advice!

Mentor Responsibilities 

  • Guide with your experiences

Be the mentor you wish you had had when you were at the same stage in your career as your mentee is now. If you have experiences that can help guide them, share them, talking about the positives and negatives of your approach.

  • Turn up

Your mentee’s time is important, so make sure you’re on time and present. Be focused on them for your meeting timeframe.

  • Support and Be Open

Do you remember how daunting it was to be a fresh-out-of-uni dev? That’s likely the experience of your mentee. Be supportive of where they’re at, believe in their potential. Provide different paths for them to progress their careers.

  • Honesty

Be honest in your advice, even if it is something that your mentee may not agree with. They’re coming to you because you have experiences that they do not have. Honest advice will always be more valuable than dishonest platitudes. Give them advice that will challenge them to be a better developer and professional
